Dominican Republic Extremely High Prices   Don’t let your travel agent give you the false information that the Dominican Republic is cheap. It is NOT TRUE! The prices are triple US prices for the basic necessities. Add insult to injury 85% of their people are poor!   The problem began when the last president drove the dollar to 56 to 1. Prices skyrocketed.   The elections rolled around and the...

Kimberley – a diamond in the wilderness!

On the border of the Northern Cape and Free State, 177km west of Bloemfontein, lies Kimberley, the capital of the of the Northern Cape. When you think of Kimberley and its Diamond fields, it is easy to imagine a wonderland of romance and riches. And yet, the reality is that Kimberley and its surrounds are mostly dry and uninspiring; it is unlikely that the city will again experience the glamour and importance that it had for two decades at the end of the 19th century. For this reason, many tourist by-pass Kimberley and it was this self-same reason that I...

Western Caribbean Cruise

We were on the Radiance of the Seas for the western Caribbean cruise on November 28/04. This was our second cruise with Royal Caribbean with our first last year on the larger Adventure of the Seas. After one cruise with RCI, I expected roughly the same standards with the Radiance and in general, I wasn't disappointed. Staterooms: Our stateroom was an inside aft cabin and we were not disappointed. It was roomy enough and the lighting was adequate. Closet space and drawers were also sufficient for our use. We noticed that the double beds here were actually a bit better...

Finding Cheap Airfare Is Easy

Every wonder how the guy next to you on the plane found his cheap airfare? What you have never asked the guy what he paid for his seat! This is the best way to find cheap airfare when you travel let me explain: The last time I flew to Atlanta I got one of the last seats on the plane. I actually surfed the internet for a bit and when I seen that there were no low fares available I went right to Delta's website and got the last seat. You can see this before you select the flights on...

The Power Converter - Sometimes it's Just Not Enough!

Just because you have packed your handy power converter don’t get too confident that all your electrical problems are solved. Electronic appliances (CD players, stereos, VCRs) require a transformer instead of a voltage converter. Single Volt products with electronic circuitry need a specific sine wave to operate. An AC transformer will maintain the quality of the sine wave where as an AC power converter won’t, and therefore damage the electronic circuitry. Fortunately many dual voltage converters include a built in transformer.  Another thing that you will want to factor in is the difference in Hertz (50 and 60Hz). Even with...

Orlando vacation fun begins (or ends) with Gatorland

What’s Gatorland? Well, I’m glad you asked.Gatorland is a great “in between” place to visit while you’re in Orlando for vacation. Let me explain. When visitors first arrive in Orlando they often have half a day or so of time on their hands before they start touring the major theme parks. Or, maybe they find themselves in the opposite situation. They’re at the tail-end of their trip and they want something to do after they’ve already hit the big attractions.Gatorland is a perfect place to fill this void. There’s enough to see and do here to take up a good...

Dunn's River Falls in Jamaica

One of the ports of call for our Royal Caribbean cruiseship was Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Probably the most famous site in the region is Dunn's River Falls and we chose to tour it on our own rather than through one of the cruiseship tours. Once we disembarked from the cruiseship, there were cabs and shuttlebuses available at the pier. Cabs to Dunn's River Falls were $22 US for a return trip. Cabs allowed 1-3 people per vehicle. We were also told at the pier that small shuttlebuses also go to the Falls at $5.50 US per person. These were also...

Everyone is aware of a city called New York, everyone has seen the 'Big Apple' at least as it appears on photographs, but not everyone has yet taken some time to explore some areas of NYC that in fact host the majority of the population of the greater city as well as a wide range of attractions. The 'Outer Boroughs' of New York City are virtually free of high-rise buildings such as 'skyscrapers' and generally are not the place were you'll find the 'big corporation' headquarters, but you can be sure that in the 'Outer Boroughs' you'll have plenty of...
